2nd Alarm High School Fire

At approximately 03:53 HRS, Company 24 was dispatched for a working building fire at 100 Green Ave, The Penn Wood High School, in Lansdowne Borough. Company 19 (Lansdowne) was originally dispatched there moments prior for an automatic fire alarm, and upon their arrival had fire showing from the main lobby. Engine 24 made the response with 6 personnel, secured a water supply, and laid in to side Alpha. The crew from Engine 24 was tasked with the 2nd Due special service role, and ordered to ventilate and search Division 2. While Engine 24 opened up above the fire and performed searches for fire extension, Engine Company 19 had the bulk of the fire under control, which ended up involving an area of approximately 100 ft. each way on Division 1. Moments after the fire was placed under control by 19 Command, Engine Company 36 advised that they had found a well involved classroom in the North wing of Division 1, separate from the original fire area. Crews from Engine 24 reported to Division 1 and began assisting the other crews with hose line advancement, extinguishment, and overhaul. Crews operated for over 3 hours prior to being released. Damage to the building is expected to result in its closure for the rest of the school year. The cause of the fire was determined to be intentional.&nb...

Main Street - Darby Borough

East Lansdowne was dispatched
to assist Darby Borough with a well involved, 2-story, commercial property used
for retail food sales in the downtown business district. Engine 24 responded and was positioned
in the rear with Tower 5 and Quint 21 with manpower reporting to staging. Lt. Dan Traband, Jr. (04) had the scene
command with numerous other 4th, 5th and 7th
District Officers filling out the ICS needs.

Pipeline 24 followed and was
directed to the hydrant next to Station 04 at Quarry Street & Chester
Pike. A 4” line (appox. 1000 feet)
was dropped from there to the rear of the “D” side exposure building. Connections were made to supply Tower 5’s
platform when the order for master streams was given. Once this operation was under way, it was noted that supply
was inadequate. Engine 24 was then
moved to the plug and put into the loop.

24-9 (Johnson) took over
Sector C from 21-9 and coordinated the rear while the water supply problems
continued to be worked on. At this
point, there were multiple master streams in operation both in front and in
back. This included several ground
level 2.5” lines. Most of the “C”
side wall soon came down into the middle of Fuller Street and remained inside
the established collapse zone.

Station 44 was dispatched for
a drafting assignment to supply additional water to Sector “C” from the nearby
Darby Creek. Upon the arrival of
44’s Engine, a portable hydrant was dropped near PL 24 and the supply plan
meant reversing a 5” line back out to Chester Pike where Creek access was the easiest.
This operation was successful and
all water needs were met at the completion of the evolution.

With the fire still out of
control, and now at least 8 master streams in operation, Sector “C” command
requested Operations to have PECO cut power to Fuller Street for safety
reasons. The deluge gun from PL 24
was set up on the ground at the edge of the collapse zone in the C/D
corner.

Supply for the gun was from
44’s portable hydrant which was now supplementing Tower 5 and providing water
to Truck 19. Truck 19 was
positioned on New Walnut Street and extended its main ladder over the Fuller
Street houses. This allowed for
water to be placed in the area of the collapsed rear wall.

The fire eventually went to 3
alarms with many special calls before the upper hand was gained. Command had to coordinate with
emergency management, Aqua, DER and numerous other agencies and fire
departments. There were only three
minor injuries and the investigation is ongoing. Fire damage is to the extent that Darby officials have
announced that the building will have to be demolished immediately.

Kudos to Darby’s Lt. Traband,
a part-time East Lansdowne (Safer Grant) firefighter, for a well-executed
incident action plan. While
Station 24 was in service for more than 7 hours, Darby remained on scene well
into the evening working hot spots and assisting the investigation.

Shortly before 05:00 hrs, Company 19 (Lansdowne) was alerted for an automatic fire alarm at 32 S. Wycombe Ave, the Keystone Apartments. Moments later the Police Department advised Fireboard of fire showing from the upper floor of the building. The building fire was dispatched bringing in company 24, 16 and RIT 9. Upon arrival, Engine 24, staffed with 4 personnel, secured a water supply at Wycombe and Baltimore Ave and laid in to side Alpha. Engine 19, under the command of 19-9A (Worley), simultaneously secured a water supply from Nyack and Wycombe Ave. Engine 24, under the command of 24-9A (Carr), observed fire showing from the 3rd floor, Bravo side apartment, extending into the cock loft and running the roof overhang. Engine 24 deployed the 250' attack line to the 3rd floor, where conditions allowed for a rapid search of all adjacent apartments while waiting for water. Crews entered the well involved fire apartment and began extinguishing the fire. During the course of the primary search, one victim was located inside the fire apartment and removed to awaiting EMS. It took crews an additional hour to bring the fire under control, as much of the fire had extended into the cock loft prior to FD arrival, and the newly renovated building included double framed walls and ceilings which severely delayed crews in opening up the entire ceiling of Division 3. Interior crews operated a total of 4 lines on Division 3, and several truck crews performed numerous cuts along the roof. Several fire fighter injuries were sustained, but are not life threatening, The victim removed from the fire apartment was pronounced DO...

On 1-9-13 at approximately 16:56 HRS, Fire-board received multiple calls for smoke in the area of the 700 Block of Long Lane, possibly coming from the Upper Darby Police Sub Station. While approaching the area blanketed by smoke, Engine 36 laid a supply line before being advised by UD-11 (Boyce), that the fire was located in East Lansdowne Borough.

Just a few hours into the new year, the 1st alarm assignment for Yeadon Borough was dispatched at 03:13 hours to first block of Lincoln Avenue for the dwelling fire. Paramedic Pete Bochanski (M105) notified Fireboard of a heavy smoke condition in the area of Lincoln and Wycombe Avenues and requested the Fire Department at around the same time the 911 Center was receiving calls from the scene. Soon after, Bochanski a.k.a. “the Healer”, was rescuing an occupant off of the porch roof. Medic 04 was also in the area and was transporting the occupant as 16-9 (DiIenno) was arriving to find the home well involved on all floors. The occupancy was identified as a 2 ½ story stone twin with fire showing throughout and advancing into the exposure. Engine 24 was under the direction of Deputy Chief James Carr, III (24-9A) and a long run was made from Union Avenue to establish a water supply. Later on, Pipeline 24 pieced in with an Engine from 22 to finish the run and supply multiple units. The 2nd alarm was struck based on the pre-arrival reports, and at that point, the response included the following companies: Yeadon (16), Lansdowne (19), East Lansdowne (24), Clifton Heights (03), Millbourne (22), Darby #1 (04), Sharon Hill (09), Cardington-Stonehurst (36), Holmes (43), & Leedom (70). The decision was made early on to go defensive on the primary address and an attempt was made to salvage the adjoining twin. With the rapid advance of fire, and the rapid deterioration of the structural integrity, Command ordered evacuation and a 100% defensive posture. The fire produced a high volume of embers that traveled several blocks but fortunately there were no spot fires anywhere else in the neighborhood. The 3rd alarm was sounded at 03:48 hours and brought Collingdale #1 (06), Collingdale #2 (42), an Engine from Garrettford-Drexel Hill (20), and an Engine from Glenolden (05), as well as the Tower from Primos-Secane-Westbrook Park (74). Master streams were employed for the duration of the event with periodic stops to assess progress. At one point, the divider wall fell into Sector “D” and struck the extended main of Truck 19. No serious damage was observed. Two minor injuries were reported with one Firefighter to Fitzgerald Mercy for a head laceration. Yeadon Cars 1 and 1A have the investigation. Units made themselves available after the fire was declared under control and the Company was restored in quarters after about 5 hours of service time.Lots of additional photos available in our Gallery....
